Doctor Treloar’s SURFING PAGE

This web-page contains some of my photos of local surfing spots in the Geelong region, such as Bell’s Beach and 13th Beach, on the Surf Coast, Victoria, Australia. I’ve been surfing the region for twenty years, and it is world class. All of the photos are of beaches in the Geelong region, within 20 minutes drive from the city.

8’ mega-surf at Bell’s Beach (20 minutes south of Geelong, through Torquay)

Check out the size of the guy on the wave, and the one paddling out.

4’ tubes near 13th beach (I can’t reveal the location – the locals will kill me, though not this particular bloke – he’s the local council’s beach inspector. What a job!)
4’ tubes near 13th beach (ditto) 2’ tubes over a shallow rock platform near 13th beach

(unsurfable on a stick)

4’ tubes near 13th beach (ditto) 6’ tubes near 13th beach

(very surfable on anything!)

Unfortunately, I cannot reveal most of the above locations (except to enrolled students). Come and study Architecture or Construction Management at Deakin University and explore the opportunities. All the breaks are within a 30 minute drive from Geelong over a stretch of about 60 kms, and there are literally hundreds of reef, beach and point breaks (mainly right-handers) that work most days in the year. Water temperature varies from a chilly 10oC in Winter to a balmy 18oC in Summer. You can surf without a wetsuit some days in Summer (December to February), but they are essential in the other months. Locals are reasonable at most breaks, just don’t ‘drop-in’ or act like a ‘townie’ too much. When its flat (i.e., less than 2’), usually in Summer, you can jump in the car for an hour or two and be at Johanna Beach, where it will probably be 4-6’. This is where they go when Bell’s is too small for the Easter competition.

I am a Postdoctoral Fellow at the School of Architecture and Building, Deakin University, and am keen to attract undergraduate and postgraduate students to Deakin University (if you haven't guessed already – there’s no such thing as a free lunch!).
